40 Days & 40 Nights – Preparation

Boyd begins preparing for his immersion into the wilderness by spending the morning tracking a pride of lions which ends in an unusual encounter. Together with the increase in temperature at the end of the summer season Boyd contemplates the impact of the weather (hot and cold, dry and wet) on his time in the wilderness.

Boyd discusses books that he is considering taking out to the treehosue with him. Some titles include:

  • The Call of the Wild – Jack London
  • The Ivory Trail – Cecil Barnard and T. V. Bulpin
  • West with the Night – Beryl Markham
  • The Overstory – Richard Powers
  • St Francis of Assisi – Richard Rohr

Boyd tells the story of Shangaan tracker Winnis Mathebula and some of his ingenious bushcraft borne from a life of simplicity.

  3. Hi Boyd,

Looking forward to the insights on your remarkable journey. I feel privileged to have known Winnis Mathabula. I remember him sharing stories as your grandfather’s tracker, around the fireside in the boma. Sitting on his haunches, he would set the scene by gently tracing the movements of various animals or people in the river sand, with all of us circled around him. Most of us, including guests, could not speak Shangaan, but Winnis’s ability to act out the story transcended language barriers. Invariably the climax would include him standing and gesticulating wildly with loud animal and human noises, much to our delight. What a great storyteller!
Wishing you a safe and memorable inward journey.
    Love
    Vee

  4. I can’t wait for our 50%. Thinking of you friend.
